Playing with petals

Since there are so many photographs with flowers as their main subjects I have been thinking about ways to create unique images – so I started playing with petal arrangements. Then I started experimenting with colours on the petal arrangements – here are some of the results. Tell me what you think please.

Blue Chrysanthemums

Although I enjoy flowers in their natural states it’s sometimes fun to see them in quirky or unusual ways such as these blue Chrysanthemums that I recently purchased as a table decoration. If you like you can even dye your flowers.

Whimsical White Butterflies

When trying to capture images of these white butterflies I have noticed that they behave rather differently to the Peacock butterflies that I photographed before. They tend to be a lot more sensitive to movement and take flight the moment they sense a disturbance. They are therefore a lot harder to capture.

“Ne’er cast a cloot til Mey’s oot”

According to folklore the saying “Ne’er cast a cloot til Mey’s oot” conveys a warning not to shed any cloots (clothes) before the summer has fully arrived and the may flowers (hawthorn blossoms) are in full bloom. The Hawthorn is a rather common tree in the English countryside and usually in May it gives a beautiful display of clusters of small flowers. It is therefore also sometimes called the May Tree and the blossom itself has also been called May. The Hawthorn belongs to a large genus of shrubs and trees called Crataegus. There are many species and hybrids and the flower colours include, white, pink and red.

Lovely Lisianthus

The delicate blooms of Lisianthus are really lovely to behold and look a bit like roses but without the thorns. They have a romantic, dreamy look about them hence their popularity in wedding bouquets.

Waiting for a Peacock Butterfly on Buddleia

The Buddleia in front of our house is not producing the best blooms this year but fortunately it is still attracting lovely butterflies. It’s aptly named the butterfly bush. I discovered that in the case of butterflies it is better not to chase but rather to wait quietly until they settle.
