Beauty in a Single Bloom

There are times when a single bloom in a bouquet captures my attention. A combination of vibrant color and intricate details that shouts out to the universe – isn’t life wonderful!

Its also an opportunity to practice mindfulness, to pause and reflect and appreciate a moment of stillness and the times that bring us joy.

My husband recently gave me a bouquet just before Valentine’s Day and he knows I like a collection of various types of blooms and colors. The one that stood out for me was a yellow Gerbera Daisy, bringing a piece of my African homeland to my home.

This description was taken from the ProFlowers Blog “The Gerbera daisy was discovered in 1884 near Barberton, South Africa, by Scotsman Robert Jameson. While the flower’s scientific name, Gerberajamesonii, recollects the name of its founder, the meaning of its common name draws from German naturalist Traugott Gerber.”

Here are two of the photos I took which are now for sale on my FineArtAmerica site.

To be judged by Anne Geddes – please vote for my entries!

There aren’t many people who haven’t heard of Anne Geddes. The wonderful creativity and unique niche of her photography is so distinctive.

FineArtAmerica is currently hosting a National TV photo contest that she will be judging. The winners of the competition will appear in their next TV commercial which is scheduled to begin airing in July 2015.

To make it through the first round your photos need to get at least 250 votes. There are thousands of entries and the last number I saw of shares of the competition were over 38 000! Some lovely people have already voted for my work and that was very heartwarming!

Competition is so tough but since this is the week of shipping for the #YourTurnChallenge I have submitted my three entries and I’m hoping for the best!

So if you like what you see – please vote for me! Clicking on the image will take you directly to the voting page.

LinkedIn doesn’t like flakey

The conversation with my relocation adviser was about fifteen minutes in when we started talking about my LinkedIn profile summary. She took one look at it and said “You will have to remove the bit about the floral photography, recruiters don’t like flakey”.

Floral photography is my passion. Nothing ignites my soul like capturing the essence of a bloom in all it’s splendour. To have my art judged and demoted at a glance hurt.

Understandably the conversation rapidly deteriorated after that. If being passionate about floral photography made me flakey then so be it!

I would be a flakey artsy generalist instead of a boxed in, easily defined, scientific writer. If a recruiter didn’t like that I was flakey then they didn’t have work that would fuel my creative fire so that was no loss anyway.

I maintain that the world needs flakey! The world needs our authentic creative selves connecting with our passions to drive us into new realms of accomplishment.

You define who you are and you set the boundaries. Not conforming to expectations is not a bad thing. Sterilising the flakey is not a solution.

So be brave and be flakey! Live your passion and leave a legacy. I know I will.

So here’s another piece of my art (you fan find more on FineArtAmerica):
