Flares adding fantasy to florals

When post processing my pics I try to add something that will make the image unique and remarkable. Often my attempts don’t yield the results I want so it usually feels like every one is an experiment. Each bloom has a different energy when you see it up close and the detail in each image focuses attention on different aspects. These are some of my experiments with adding lens flares in Photoshop.

Caught in the Rose Garden

Getting together with a portrait photographer on my usual walk about the local park was lots of fun. Specimen spotting and talking to the sun to get the right light was also rather entertaining for her 2 year old charge who happened to be carrying a lovely sprig of lavender given to him by a passerby. When I got entranced by the blooms in the rose garden I also got caught on camera…

Sweet Gardenia for my Mum

The Gardenia plant at our back door is steadily producing more blooms. I often take a look at them or just get a whiff of their sweet fragrance. I wanted to take a pic of one as tomorrow is my Mum’s first birthday since her death and they remind me of her and my grandfather. I think this is the best pic I’ve taken of one so far. Seems apt.

5 day Black and White Challenge

A Facebook friend just nominated me for a 5 day Black and White challenge. From my artist page stats it appears that black and white photos of flowers are an acquired or particular taste as these tend to be my least popular. Unless I just still need to learn to take better black and white floral pics!

Salmon Pink Geraniums

The Salmon Pink Geranium in my garden is not very big nor is it a prolific bloomer which is no surprise considering how little water it gets during the drought but every now and then it blooms and it’s wonderful to watch it emerge.

International Day of the Girl

Snow White Barberton Daisies

Life is fleeting as I was reminded this week when my Mum passed away. If my mothers life taught me anything it was to live without fear of living or dying as then we never see and experience the beauty that life holds.

Being in another country is not easy when you lose a loved one and a local friend was kind enough to bring me some beautiful white Barberton Daisies aka Gerberas – a South African favourite. Gerbera daisies can mean innocence, purity, and cheerfulness and were just the right flower to connect me to home.

The Gerbera daisy was discovered in 1884 near Barberton, South Africa, by Scotsman Robert Jameson. The scientific name of the flower is Gerbera jamesonii and reflects its discoverer but the meaning of its common name derives from German naturalist Traugott Gerber.
